Microphones and Audio for Camming
Viewers forgive soft video faster than bad audio. A clear voice makes conversation easier, and conversation drives tips and private shows.
USB or XLR?
- USB microphones plug straight into your computer. They are the simplest choice for most performers.
- XLR microphones need an audio interface but give more flexibility and are easier to upgrade later.
Microphone types
- Dynamic mics pick up less room noise, which helps in untreated rooms or noisy apartments.
- Condenser mics sound more detailed but also capture fans, traffic and echo.
- Lavalier (clip-on) mics keep your voice consistent as you move, but the cable or transmitter must stay out of frame.
Placement and room
- Keep the mic close and out of the camera's view if possible, for example on a boom arm just above the frame.
- Soft furnishings (rugs, curtains, bedding) reduce echo.
- Turn off loud fans and notifications.
Software tips
In OBS add a noise suppression filter and a limiter so laughs and sudden sounds do not clip. Always do a short test recording before your first show.
Protect your privacy
Your mic can pick up things you do not want broadcast: names, phone calls, street noise. Read our safety and privacy guide.
